This pattern came about because I wanted to make a holiday gift for my middle daughter’s grade seven teacher: an elegant woman who looks great in strong colours and who, I was told, loves owls. In my stash was some worsted yarn in a colour that really suited her, so I designed a shawl pattern to use up as much of its yardage as possible. This triangular shawl starts at the bottom and works outward, with the border knitted at the same time. This makes it easier to resize if you’ve got less or more yarn than the pattern calls for; resizing tips are included with the instructions.

Skills required:

  • Knitting
  • Purling
  • Yarn overs
  • Decreases

Knitters can follow either written or charted instructions, so being able to read charts is useful but not required.

Other materials needed

  • Four (4) stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
