Mithrandir
A lightweight textured scarf, designed in honour of my favourite literary wizard, Gandalf the Grey.
He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which a white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots. — J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, “An Unexpected Party”
The flowing and crossing columns of stitches represent a journey‘s roads, rivers, and forests, and Gandalf’s rune is tucked unobtrusively into one corner. Instead of cables, left- and right-leaning decreases create the textured pattern. The corresponding yarn-over ‘holes’ are twisted shut on the wrong-side rows, so the result is a non-lacy kind of lace knitting.
Materials: Approximately 900 yards of laceweight yarn. I used less than one skein of Vintage Purls Lace, a two-ply merino yarn, in a semi-solid grey. Fingering-weight yarn would also work well, with slightly larger needles.
Sizing: My scarf measures 200cm x 30cm. Instructions are included for customising the length and width.
Errata: In row 3 of the ‘Beginning Chart’, the first yarn-over should be an m1 increase (in order to avoid getting two yarn-overs in a row during the repeats). Thanks to ladyofrohan for pointing this out!
Pattern is for personal use only.
