Mjölnir
Mjölnir is the hammer of the thunder god, Thor, in Norse mythology. It was used as a devastating weapon, a divine instrument to provide blessings, create interdimensional portals and to call down lightning. The hammer was commonly worn as a pendant during the Viking Age. Thor and his Mjölnir are depicted on a variety of objects from the archaeological record. Today the symbol appears in a wide variety of media and is again worn as a pendant by various groups, including adherents of modern Heathenry. My hat pattern, Mjölnir, uses some creative license to represent this historical and mythological instrument.
Hat is worked in the round with a twisted brim evolving into Thor’s stylized hammer, Mjölnir, using twisted stitches and cables. The pattern is presented in both written and graphed versions, with 2 instructional video links included.
Skill Level: An adventurous beginner to working in the round would find this challenging but doable.
Time to Knit: 8 - 12 hours.
