Monarch Butterfly Shawl
“Monarch Butterfly” is a lovely lace shawl named after the famous migrating butterflies.
It has a crescent shape, with wide “butterfly” lace border and is knit sideways in light fingering yarn.
This pattern will look equally lovely if made in sock yarn, lace or even a DK weight. As it is worked sideways it is very easy to change its size just by knitting more lace repeats. Also perfect for using up all the yarn; use half the ball for the increase part, leaving a little to make one full repeat on the straight section and use up the rest for the decrease section.
The instructions are given for one skein (459m) of Sweet Fiber “Heirloom” shown in “Paper Birch” colour with 1m left only.
The purple version shown here is knit in “Lunayarns” “Elysium” fingering weight in “Sweet Pea” colour; approximately 580m used; size 60” wingspan and 18” depth (25 lace repeats total).
If using just 1 skein (400m) of sock yarn the maximum number of repeats will be 16 (approximate size 50” x 10”).
The pattern is fairly easy and it would be great for knitters who would like to start knitting true lace (patterned on both sides).
There are also different ways of finishing the top of the garter stitch body, choose i-cord, crab stitch, crocheted chain or leave as is.
“Monarch Butterfly” lends itself to beading, use beads to add a bit of sparkle to the edge only or place them on the “butterflies” as well.
“Monarch Butterfly” is a very adaptable pattern, easy to memorize and perfect for stash busting.
The instructions are written and the lace pattern is also charted.
If you are an intermediate knitter you shouldn’t have problems tackling it and if you are a seasoned lace knitter it would be very easy indeed.
Nature created butterflies in so many beautiful colours. Knit one or two “Monarch Butterfly” shawls in one of them!!
