Make the most of your single skeins with the beautiful brioche of Monty Shawl, a completely reversible shallow crescent shawl with knitted-on brioche border.

With a super wearable shape that can be wrapped around your neck and worn as a scarf, or draped around your shoulders for a classic shawl, Monty Shawl is as enjoyable to wear as it is to knit.

The combination of a soothing garter stitch main panel, and two-colour brioche border makes Monty a knit of two halves, with the garter panel worked in full before the border is knitted on.

And for those who are newer to brioche knitting, the border is charted and written out in full, with links to video demonstrations of all the brioche stitches used.

Key information
Monty Shawl is worked sideways, starting with the garter panel. Increases are worked along one side of the shawl to create the curved edge, before being reduced back down to the cast-off edge.

The two-colour brioche border is then knitted on to the garter panel using picked up stitches decreased together with a stitch from the garter border.

As both garter stitch and two-colour brioche have a large amount of stretch to them, it’s easy to alter the size of the shawl simply through blocking, as it can be stretched out for a larger shawl or kept at a tighter gauge for a smaller one.

Suggested yarn:
The sample is worked using 3 skeins of Birdstreet yarn 4ply (425m/465yds per 100g, 75% super-wash merino, 25% nylon). The main garter panel is worked in the Kookaburra colourway, with Old No. 7 (CC2) and Stella Bella (CC1) used for the brioche border.

The sample used around 300m/328yds of each colourway.

Gauge and finished measurements:
The gauge of the shawl is dependant on how aggressively it’s blocked. For reference, the sample has a gauge of 28st and 32 rows to 4in/10cm, measured over garter stitch, and a wingspan of 55in/138cm with a depth of .12in/30cm.

• 3.5mm (US 4) circular needle of any length. Although the shawl is worked flat,
the brioche section needs you to slide the stitches from one end of your
needle to the other, meaning you’ll need a circular needle.
