Transform your empty glass jars into beautiful glass jar art with this free, festive knitting pattern! Perfect for Christmas, these knitted jar covers create a cosy glow for candlelight, or can be used to display small plants, fairy lights, or seasonal decorations. They can then be reused in summer as little hurricane lamps outdoors.

This free Christmas knitting pattern is a super quick project—just 1 to 2 hours—ideal for practicing lace knitting while creating something both practical and pretty. It’s also a fantastic ‘spend nothing’ project: use up leftover yarn, repurpose jars from your recycling bin, and those candles that seem to multiply in your drawer. Turn clutter into calming Christmas lights that bring warmth and energy to your home!

Sizes
If worked to gauge, your cosy will be 19cm diameter unstretched, designed to stretch to fit glass jars of aprox 21 - 25 cm

Difficulty
This pattern is created as a small, simple square, seamed closed, making it a quick and fairly straightforward pattern. It uses a Shetland Lace Stitch which is a 6 stitch repeat, and 2 row repeat (one of which is just knit). An adventurous beginner ready to tackle lace stitches should manage.

Accessability
The PDF download version of pattern comes in 2 formats, choose between ‘standard’, ‘large print’,.
Both versions of this pattern are in black text, using Verdana - a clear, sans serif font.
They use an easy to read layout which includes bold for all emphasis, and avoid italics or block capitals.
Text is left justified throughout, and no columns are used.

All instructions are fully written out. A stitch chart is included, but all required information is in the text.

The standard version of this pattern is presented in 15 point font.
The Large Print version is in 22 point font.

The one lace row of the kitting pattern is the only place in the pattern where abbriviations are used. This is presented first in standard format, then repeated in full words, with no abbreviations. This may be helpful for dyslexic and neurodiverse people who struggle to read patterns, those new to reading patterns. Please note at this point (December 2025)pattern has not been tested on a screen reader, as I can not do that myself. Previous patterns with similar layout have been tested and approved by staff from ‘Inclusion London’.

The free blog version of the pattern is also formatted for accessability.
