My Crochet Kitchen Sakura Mochi
** Coming Soon! **
Every year, my husband and I look forward the flowering of the blossom trees in late spring (Hanami as it’s known in Japan).
We love celebrating by making and eating various wagashi treats like these sakura mochi. They have a more coarse texture than other mochi you might be familiar with, so this is reflected in the pattern by holding 2 strands of yarn double.
The pattern is suitable for beginner as it’s made using very basic stitches, though some of the construction techniques may be new to you. I’ve therefore included photo guides throughout to help you follow along, as well as links to videos for any potentially unfamiliar stitches.
It’s a very quick make and is both simple and satisfying. What I love best about this pattern though is that you can interact with the finished result!
You’ll make the mochi filling 1st and then the pickled sakura leaf to wrap around it. There’s also the option to add a little sakura flower that can be sewn onto the top too.
The leaf has a small loop so that it doesn’t need to be sewn on / permanently attached in any way. Instead, you can just wrap the leaf around the mochi and tuck the thin end of the leaf through the loop at the base – so it’s a lot of fun for kids (and adults) to play with and ‘make’ themselves.
