Nebula Nova Sweater
OUT NOW!
Allow a skein of wildly variegated striking yarn to create an explosion of bright colour: a nebula nova across the stocking stitch sky of your sweater. Just as space phenomena create spectacles across the sky, the Nebula Nova Sweater features a contrast colour patterning over a background sky of main colour.
CONSTRUCTION
Nebula Nova is a broken rib and two-colour patterned top-down sweater with a gently shaped boat neck. The body is worked late, with front worked first and stitches picked up at the shoulders to work the back. Easy wrap and turn short rows are used to shape the neckline and shoulders.
The front and back are seamed together with mattress stitch after knitting. Stitches are then picked up around the armhole to work the sleeves in the round.

Yarn Amounts per m / yds:
This is the yardage estimated for the suggested yarn:
MC (double-knit weight)
860 (955,1055,1100,1195) 1325, 1440, 1570, 1675 m
940 (1045, 1155, 1205, 1305) 1450, 1575, 1720, 1835 yds
AND
CC (4ply / fingering-weight)
145 (160, 180, 200, 215) 240, 255, 270, 290 m
160 (175, 195, 220, 230) 260, 280, 300, 315 yds
If you’re planning to lengthen your Nebula Nova, you will need more yarn. If you’re purchasing hand-dyed yarn, please ensure that you have enough yarn from one batch to complete your vest.
If you’re at all concerned about the CC strands pulling or catching, consider either choosing more “woolly” yarns that will stick together, or holding a strand of mohair lace with your CC to help the strands “stick” to the MC background. For the latter option, you will need the same length of mohair lace yarn as the CC.
GAUGE, NEEDLES & NOTIONS
Gauge: 21 sts x 30.5 rows = 10 cm / 4” measured over broken rib in MC on 3.75mm (US 5) needles, after blocking
22 sts x 46 rows = 10 cm / 4” measured over quilted stitch in MC and CC on 4mm (US 6) needles, after blocking
Needles: 3.5mm (US 4) circular needles, 80cm (32”) long
3.75mm (US 5) circular needles, 80cm (32”) long
4.00mm (US 6) circular needles, 80cm (32”) long
3.75mm and 3.5mm needles are also used for working the sleeves in the round, so double-pointed needles are also required if not working magic loop.
Notions: 2 lockable stitch markers, 2 further lockable stitch markers / safety pins, tapestry needle
SIZE AND FIT
1 (2, 3, 4, 5) 6, 7, 8, 9, designed to fit with between 15 cm - 23 cm / 6” - 9” of positive ease around chest
Nebula Nova can be worn with varying amounts of positive ease. When deciding which size to make, consider the neck circumference, shoulder width, and armhole circumference, as well as the chest circumference. The armhole depth can be adjusted to suit fit when seaming sides.
See schematic and table (in pattern photos to left) for finished measurements to help you pick which size to knit.
Size 4 sample shown with 23 cm / 9” of positive ease across the chest. Maddie is 5’9 in height.
Pattern includes full written instructions, photographs, a schematic and has been tech-edited and preview-knitted.
