new year, new shawl
Welcome to my first mystery knitalong!
Here is the complete, edited pattern for my “new year, new shawl” mystery knitalong. The shawl is a semi-circular, half-pi design, and knitters received a selection of lace stitch patterns for each clue, and were able to decide which pattern to use in each tier of the shawl. In total, there are 12 stitch patterns to use in the body of the shawl, and 4 border stitch patterns. The instructions work for yarns of different weights and fibres. Aggressive blocking is needed, so natural fibres are recommended and my samples were all knit with wool-rich yarns. On Ravelry, you can find projects knit with cotton and with handspun yarns. The real mystery of this knitalong was that I didn’t know what the finished shawls were going to look like any more than the knitters did when they started knitting. It was a lot of fun watching the projects grow, and seeing how knitters were using the stitch patterns.
Directions are fully written out, and the lace patterns are also charted. Skills you will need to know--or learn to complete this project:
- garter tab cast-on (instructions included in pattern);
- knit and purl;
- yo increase;
- k2tog decrease;
- ssk decrease;
- cdd double decrease (also known as s2kp)
- lace bind-off (instructions included in pattern),

Errata--this is corrected in the complete version.
Tier Four, Row 1 is missing a yarnover. It should read as follows.
Row 1 (RS): K4, * yo, k1; repeat from * to last 4 sts, yo, k4—79 sts.
