Not Here & Never Was
This pattern is part of a kit from Old Maiden Aunt. You can find more details here.
Not Here and Never Was is a love story between a dinosaur (Not Here) and dragon (Never Was) in the 1968 book, written and illustrated by Virginia Smith in swirling, psychedelic watercolours with black pen lines. The colours turquoise, orange and pink dominate and it is these that have inspired Lilith’s colours, named for the two love-reptiles. This shawl has been designed to make the tips be each of their tails, so that they wrap around your neck, like the buddies entwined — and you have the fun of a two-sided/coloured scarf with two different approaches to triangular construction.
CONSTRUCTION NOTES
This shawl is formed of two intersecting triangles: Not Here on one side and Never Was on the other. They are worked flat, in garter stitch using short rows and eyelets, to seamlessly join them together, without the need to pick up and knit. You don’t even need to wrap, you just turn for the short rows, as they are used to create large eyelets when you join on the second colour. The Not Here triangle decreases from a provisional cast-on along the longest edge. Eyelets in garter stitch are used to create a mesh-like texture. The Never Was triangle is worked on from the out-of-action stitches of Not Here. Never Was is worked in garter stitch, with a decrease at the start of every row. Extra stitches are cast on to make the spines.
