About the pattern
This nursery rhyme inspired pattern is for a pocket and belt.
‘Lucy Locket lost her pocket’ - but how was that even possible?
Historically, ‘pockets’ were bags which were tied around the waist with belts, under a woman’s skirt. The skirt would have an opening so the woman could reach into her pocket, through her skirts and petticoats.
This fairytale pocket on the other hand is styled a bit more for fun summer days and music festivals. Wear it outside your jeans, or outside your leggings.
Just don’t lose it, in case Kitty Fisher is still about!
Sizes
The belt comes in three sizes. It is designed to be worn long, with the belt pulled through the fastening and hanging down to the knee, with a fairytale tie-belt look. Choose the length you want based on your waist circumference and height, and the length you want dangling down.
To fit waists from 22 to 60 inches, with 15-20 inches extra length to dangle. Measure around your waist and down to your knee to choose your size.
Belt length:
Short: 35 inches/ 90 centimetres
Medium: 47 inches / 120 centimetres
Long: 60 inches / 150 centimetres
Tension/Gauge
2 dome pattern repeats = 4 inches / 10 cm.
Skill level
This is an intermediate level pattern. It is a quick 2-3 hour make.
Stitches uses include working a foundation turning chain and surface slip stitches.
Crochet language
This pattern is written in English, with both U.K. and US versions available.
Accessibility
This pattern comes in 3 formats, choose between ‘standard’, ‘large print’, and ‘screen reader’.
All versions of this pattern are in black text, using Canva Sans - a clear, sans serif font.
They use an easy to read layout which includes bold for all emphasis, and avoid italics or block capitals.
Text is left justified throughout, and no columns are used.
All instructions are fully written out. Some illustrative pictures are included, but all required information is in the text.
The standard version of this pattern is presented in 15 point font.
The Large Print version is in 22 point font, with additional descriptive text describing images.
The screen reader version is in 15 point font. All text is written out as full words, and no abbreviations are used. This may be helpful for dyslexic and neurodiverse people who struggle to read patterns. Please note at this point (August, 2025) this pattern has not been tested on a screen reader, as I can not do that myself. Previous patterns with similar layout have been tested and approved by staff from ‘Inclusion London’.
