Parapet Shawl
The Parapet Shawl and its sister pattern, the Parapet Cowl, are 30% off through April 30th, no coupon necessary ~ enjoy!
If you have a beloved skein of a gradient or variegated yarn in your hands, this little number is a fun way to showcase it.
The Parapet Shawl begins with a relaxing triangle of garter stitch, perfect for TV or social knitting. Your special skein takes center stage in two mosaic sections near the bottom edge, where a combination of stripes and slipped stitches allows the contrast color to shine through. Strategically placed increases in the border create eye-catching points and arches and give the border a graceful flare.
Choose from three sizes to create your dream shawl, and enjoy watching the mosaic patterns take shape.
Feel free to share your project with me in my Ravelry group or on Instagram with tags #parapetshawl and @shadystroll ~ I would love to see it!
Instructions are fully written, with two optional charts.
Sizes & Measurements
Sizes: Small (Medium, Large)
Wingspan: 60 (64, 68)”/152 (163, 173) cm
Depth: 23.5 (25.5, 27.5)”/60 (65, 70) cm
Gauge
17 Stitches and 38 rows = 4”/10 cm square in garter stitch, blocked
Note: Gauge is not critical, but yardage requirements and finished measurements will vary if your gauge differs.
Yarn
- Approximately 500 (580, 630) yds/457 (530, 576) m fingering-weight yarn in main color; a solid or semi-solid yarn is recommended. Shown in Madelinetosh Tosh Mo Light in the Nocturne colorway.
- Approximately 150 (165, 180) yds/137 (151, 165) m fingering-weight yarn in contrast color; this can be a gradient (as shown here), variegated, or solid yarn. Shown in Spincycle Yarns Dyed in the Wool in The Family Jewels colorway ~ this is listed as sport-weight but combines beautifully with fingering, too.
Note: The mosaic patterns are clearest when there is plenty of contrast between the main color and contrast color.
Tools
- US 5/3.75 mm circular needle (or size necessary to achieve gauge), preferably 32”/80 cm long
- US 6/4 mm circular needle (or one size larger than that necessary to achieve gauge), preferably 32”/80 cm long (for mosaic sections)
- US 7/4.5 mm straight or circular needle (or two sizes larger than that necessary to achieve gauge) (for bind off)
- 7 Stitch markers (including 1 in a contrast color)
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Pins for blocking
