The varying sights of a country walk—from dappled sunlight to richly textured stone walls—are suggested with simple stitch patterns, rotating through three colorways so that each gets a chance to shine. Large-scale openwork flows into a slipped-stitch window pattern and then smooth stockinette, before sprays of dipped stitches lead back into openwork.

The three patterns are worked on the bias in ever-widening bands and finally seamed together. This arrangement provides plenty of visual interest and keeps the knitting fun, while also allowing knitters to keep going until they’ve used up every bit of yarn. The resulting generously sized cowl looks equally wonderful worn at its full length, or double wrapped for warmth.

NOTE: In choosing color placement, consider that Color C is used most, will be used for the longest stretch of stockinette, and may appear dominant. Color B is used least and will be used as the “frames” in the longest section of the Garter Windows pattern (with Color C inside the windows). Color A will be used for the longest stretch of openwork, followed by the shortest section of Garter Windows frames.

Needles
US 8 (5 mm) needle, any kind and length, or size to obtain gauge. Using a needle with a pointy tip will make the p4tog much easier.

Gauge
Blocked: 18 stitches and 25 rows = 4”/10 cm square in stockinette stitch.
Unblocked: 20 stitches and 28 rows = 4”/10 cm square in stockinette stitch.

Gauge is not crucial for this project, but will affect yardage and finished size if different from above.
