I love cotton double-knitted bibs for babies – they’re double-absorbent, and if the meal is messy and your laundry situation is tight, you can just flip the bib over to the other side for the next feed. And when the bib works like a dickey – fitting right over the baby’s head – it makes it much harder for the wee one to pull the thing off! The motifs for this bib were inspired by those on a Ukranian-style wooden painted egg that I’ve had since childhood.

Skills required

• knitting, purling
• chart reading
• working in the round with DPNs (two circulars or the magic loop technique are also good alternatives)
• grafting (aka Kitchener Stitch)
• double knitting know-how, including picking up stitches along edges (explained in pattern)

• 2 stitch holders
• spare length of yarn about 8” long
• stitch marker, or whatever else you like to use to mark beginning of rounds
• tapestry needle (for grafting)
• (optional) safety pin
