Graphic stripes and large square patch pockets elevate a basic open-front cardigan with vintage appeal. Falling to mid-thigh length, Rivet is still light and lofty in Shelter. Slim set-in sleeves keep the shoulders tailored to balance the long, straight torso. The single-piece body and sleeves are worked flat and seamed, and the garter stitch collar and front bands are knit from stitches picked up after assembly. This cardigan is an opportunity to play with color; departing from the high-contrast neutral scheme of the sample could lend very different effects. Imagine Rivet with barely-there stripes of Narwhal and Fossil, or in a striking combination of Cast Iron and Flannel.

Construction

The body is worked flat from the bottom up on a circular needle to accommodate the large number of stitches and to facilitate the striping pattern. The body is divided at the underarms for front and back, then each piece is worked separately to the shoulders. The sleeves are worked flat from the bottom up. The collar is picked up around the front edge after garment assembly. The pockets are worked separately and sewn on.
