Rootline Skirt
“Rootline” is a clean, modern midi skirt that channels the quiet geometry of autumn landscapes. Inspired by visible growth lines in soil and furrowed fields, the skirt uses directional ribbing and sculptural shaping to create an elegant A-line silhouette. It’s designed to be both functional and thoughtful, a piece that transitions from city strolls to countryside weekends with ease.
The skirt is worked from the top down. The waistband is constructed in double-height stockinette and folded over to encase an elastic band, ensuring both comfort and fit. From there, the skirt flows outward in 1x1 ribbing, shaped by six visible vertical increase columns: two in front, two in the back, and one on each side. These decorative increases grow organically out of the ribbing, forming a soft architectural rhythm down the body. The piece finishes with a tubular bind-off for a polished hem.
Sizing: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9)
When deciding which size to knit, choose the one that corresponds to your actual waist circumference - and opt for the smaller size if in between sizes.
Your waist circumference: 50 (55, 65, 75, 85) (95, 105, 115, 125) cm.
Full length, measured center-front from the top of the waistband: 70 cm.
Materials
Yarn: Sport weight yarn, ~287 m/100 g, approximately 1280 (1330, 1430, 1530, 1630) (1730, 1880, 1980, 2080) m.
Yardage may vary if your gauge/yarn is different.
For sample used: Strand of Drops “Nord”, 170 m/50 g, 45% Alpaca, 30% Polyamide, 25% Wool. Color: 22. Held together with Rico Design “Make it tweed”, 445 m/50 g, 35% Viscose, 35% Acrylic, 30% Polyamid. Color: 002.
Gauge: 26 sts & 30 rounds = 10 cm in 1x1 ribbing, worked in the round.
Note about blocking: If you prefer a more relaxed fit around the hips, gently stretch the ribbing horizontally during blocking. This opens up the stitches and prevents the ribbing from holding too snugly against the body.
Needles:
3.5 mm (gauge needles), two sets of 80 cm circular needles.
Or adjust needle size to meet gauge.
Other Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, scrap yarn, measuring tape, waist elastic, approx 2 cm in width, length corresponding to the waist measurement plus approximately 3 cm.
