Rue Socks
Rue is tragic figure from The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. She is a very young champion, much like Primrose would have been if Katniss hadn’t volunteered to take her place. Her death in the arena, and the kindness shown during the burial ceremony Katniss performs for her (placing flowers around her in a pleasant array, posing her as if she were sleeping), televised across all the districts, becomes a symbol for all those forced to suffer through the games, a spark that ignites a revolution.
To capture Rue’s youthful spirit, I designed a sock that is very delicate, feminine, and youthful…something a young girl like her might have worn in a different time, and a different world from the one she was given. A spark of crystal beading adds flame and light to the center of each lace petaled flower that rings its way around the ankles, in memory of her tragic death, the beauty of friendship, and the actions of another destined to start a war.
This is a toe-up sock in 5 sizes, Youth S/M, Youth L/Adult XS, S, M, L with cast on counts of 48, 56, 64, 72, 80 to allow for a wide range of sizes to fit a wide assortment of feet. The minimum foot length in the smallest size should be small enough to fit size 4-5T (4.5-5” long). There are two options for length (ankle and mid-calf) with two different cuff options, picot and ribbed.
Beading is optional. The beads are not pre-strung, but are attached using a crochet hook.
