After exploring the technique of these mosaic squares in the round with Ilsan an Eesan, our journey continues with Samsan, the third pattern in the Travelling East Collection.

Each tile in the collection comes with an accompanying triangle (to give you the freedom to use your squares as diamonds in cushions or blankets). It also comes with an original design to showcase the many possibilities we have to turn these tiles into different type of objects. Some will be small and simple, some will be larger and require some more time. The collection of patterns will give you options and suggestions. Enjoy!

The design accompanying this tile is a diamond oriented cushion cover. You have the option to make the cushion entirely out of squares, which you can join through one of my suggested methods or in any other way you prefer. You can also make use of the triangle pattern to then use a zipper or buttons for closing, allowing you to wash your cover regularly.

Gauge:
Gauge is not crucial for this pattern, as long as your tile lies flat. However, different yarns give different gauges:
Crochet thread: 13sc x 12 rows = 5cm / 2”.
Fingering weight: 11sc x 11 rows = 5cm / 2”.
DK weight: 10sc x 10 rows = 5cm / 2”.
Aran weight: 8sc x 8 rows = 5cm / 2”.

Hooks:
√ Depending on yarn choice, 2.5mm/C, 3.5mm/E-4, 4mm/G-6 or 5mm/H-8 crochet hook (Adapt hook to yarn used).

Notions
√ Tapestry needle, stitch markers.
√ Optional: a zipper or buttons to close the cover

Yarn:
√ A #0 lace (size 5 crochet thread), #2 fine (Fingering, 12wpi) or #3 lightweight (DK, 11wpi), or #4 medium (Aran, 8wpi) per tile:

• approx 20m/21yd (C1).
• approx 25m/27yd (C2).
• approx 20m/21yd (C3).

√ The cushion cover was made in DK weight with 4 colours per tile: Stylecraft Special Double knit in colours 1005/Cream: C1 (30g/90m/98yd), 1027/Khaki: C2 (136g/400m/437yd), 1020/Lemon: C3 (46g/136m/149yd) and 1065/Meadow: C4 (65g/192m/210yd).
√ The lavender, old rose and fuchsia Aran weight sample tiles used Katia Planet in colours 3960 (C1), 3986 (C2) and 3991 (C3).

The pattern comes with a special stitches section and lots of explanations on techniques
Sc – single crochet
Ss – slip stitch
Dc (dcRnd/dcR) – double crochet (see special stitches
Tr (trRnd/trR) – treble crochet (see special stitches)
Fptr (fptrRnd/fptrR) – front post treble crochet (see special stitches)

Size:
depending on yarn and hook choices size per tile:
√ No 5 crochet thread & 2.5mm hk: 11x11cm / 4½x4½”
√ Fingering weight & 3.5mm hk: 13x13cm / 5¼x5¼”
√ DK weight & 4mm hk: 15.5x15.5cm / 6x6”
√ Aran weight & 5mm hk: 18.5x18.5cm / 7¼x7¼”
The cushion cover used a 4mm/G-6 crochet hook and measures 45x45cm / 17¾x17¾”.
