Jamiesons of Shetland Spindrift 100%
wool (105m/114yd per 25g ball):
2 balls Granite (MC)
1 ball Moorgrass (CC1)
1 ball Grouse (CC2)

Yarn substitution:
The following approximate quantities of a similar fingering weight yarn may be used (quantities may vary depending upon gauge and type of yarn and are given for the larger size):
MC – 130m/140yd
CC1 – 60m/65yd
CC2 – 37m/40yd

Needles and Notions
3mm/US 2.5 (or size required to obtain gauge) circular needle, 40cm/16in length.
Set of 4 DPNs in gauge size for working centre of crown.
2.75mm/US 2 (or one size smaller than gauge needle) circular needle, 40cm/16in length.
Stitch marker, tapestry needle for finishing, dinner plate & bowl for blocking.

Gauge
24 sts and 34 rounds to 10cm/4in, after wet blocking, across stranded colourwork at widest part of crown on larger needle.
Gauge immediately above ribbing is 31 sts to 10cm/4in on smaller needle. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain gauge.

Measurements and Sizing
Diameter of crown 27cm/10.5in; ribbing size 1(2) to fit head of 53-58cm/21-23in (59-64cm/23-25in) circumference. The hat is shown in size 2 on a 59cm/23in head.

Skills Required
The pattern uses stranded colourwork, requiring the anchoring of longer yarn floats behind work. Other techniques include German twisted cast-on and corrugated ribbing. Links to information on these techniques are available on my blog. Knowledge of backward loop cast-on method is assumed.
