A tribute to the Traditional Gansey Sweater, worn by British Fisherman in the 19th and 20th Centuries. The sweater motifs are said to represent a particular village or family, making identification of those lost at sea an easier, albeit tragic task.

Sandy Road is an oversized, long sleeve, high-hip length, unisex Gansey-style Sweater designed to be worn with 6-8” of positive ease. There are six different motifs being worked across the body and sleeves. All pieces are worked flat and sewn together at the end. The neck stitches are also cast off rather than put on hold. Picking up the stitches around the neck, the three needle bind off at the shoulders and the sewn seams provide this garment with structure, which may not be present if knitted in the round with grafted shoulders. The front and back are identical, apart from the neck shaping.

It may be easier to use circular needles than straight needles to accommodate the number of stitches, particularly for the body pieces.

At the neck edges, stitches are bound off rather than decreased.

It may be useful to use stitch markers for the yoke and the top of the sleeves where several different patterns are worked in the same row.

Knit Picks Swish (DK 100% Fine Superwash Merino; 123 yards/50g) Garnet Heather 24315 13 (15, 18, 20, 23, 25, 27, 29, 30) balls.

Needles
US 2 (3.25mm) Needles, or circular needles, plus a spare (for three needle bind off) or size to obtain gauge. You will require a gauge size circular needle or DPNs to knit the neckband in the round.
