For many people in the Nordic countries, Sankta Lucia is an important celebration. It must be said though, that the Nordic version of Sankta Lucia has very little in common with the Saint Lucia of Syracuse, as most know her.
Over the centuries, the early Christian martyr has been changed into a carol-singing woman, clad in a white gown with candles in her hair. She is a symbol of hope, as she comes when the night is longest, carrying the promise that light will soon return.
The origins of this celebration are probably connected to the darkness we Nordic countries have to endure during winter. It is a dark time, with 6 hours or less of daylight, where the existence of a sun is easy to forget.
All over the country, Lucia-concerts are held on the 13th of December, from children’s productions to professional concerts.
For me, Sankta Lucia means watching the Sankta Lucia concert on TV in the morning, together with my family. It is the cosiest breakfast of the year, with large cups of hot coco, along with delicious saffron buns and ginger snaps. At lunch, some colleagues and I usually walk the halls of our workplace, to sing Christmas carols for our co-workers
And, when Lucia celebrations are over, we know that it’s only 11 days to Christmas!
