Savi dress
Savi is a long yoked dress in light and airy lambswool, worked top down. It fits tightly on the upper body and lets the hem flow freely with the winds. The coloured yoke part of the neckline is first cast on and knitted upwards in stockinette, with decreases. Working is continued upwards in grey double seed stitch with decreases going on. After a turn at the neckline the fabric is widened with increases to create the lower part over the bust, chest and back. This part is worked from the wrong side. This technique creates a double knit for the upper body.
The sleeves are short. After separation of the sleeves, decreases are worked on both sides to make the dress sit firmly on waist. On waistline, increases are added to create a flowing hem which is knit in stockinette. The hem of the dress is finished repeating the coloured bobbin stripes of the yoke. The dress is symmetrical on back and front, no short rows needed here!
My inspiration comes from the different colours of the earth. The local colour of the earth is deeply rooted in the ground and still the same colours can be found in diffe-rent places thus connecting the specific places globally to each other. Earth is the cradle which allows cultivation and has given birth to cultures on all continents.
I wanted my design to embrace you with a three-colour circular motif which concentra-tes the thoughts on you. It consists of burnt sienna, deep ochre and light yellow – colours of sand and clay – coming back to the all-over light grey which is the dominant colour of the earth in my native country. In fact, Savi means clay in Finnish. I hoped the thoughts of earth as a grounding element would connect people from different backgrounds and cultures, to find out that they have a thing in common, the earth they all live on.
