Shearwater Mini is a lightweight shoulder wrap for kids designed to highlight the character of slub yarn. Worked in one piece on larger needles, the fabric is airy and relaxed, and the uneven texture of the yarn softens the lace and gives the fabric movement.
A simple lace repeat runs across the full rectangle. After knitting, the piece is folded and seamed at the shoulder, leaving an opening for the arm and creating the poncho shape. It layers easily over dresses, tees, or sweaters and is especially sweet in tonal or hand dyed yarns.
Design Details
The wrap is knit flat as a rectangle using a repeating lace pattern. After blocking, it is folded and seamed at the shoulder. The seam placement determines the arm opening and final fit.
The lace pattern repeats across the entire width so once established, the knitting stays consistent from start to finish.
Pattern Highlights
- One piece construction
- Lightweight and breathable
- Shows off textured and hand dyed yarns
- Simple finishing with a single seam
Construction Overview
Shearwater Mini is worked flat in a rectangular shape. After blocking, the rectangle is folded and seamed along the shoulder edge to form the poncho. Adjusting the seam placement changes the arm opening and fit.
Yarn Notes
Shearwater Mini was designed with fingering weight slub yarn in mind. The texture of slub yarn adds visual interest and depth while softening the lace pattern.
Our sample was knit in Goblin Slub by Dragon Hoard Yarn. Any fingering weight yarn with drape such as merino, silk blends, linen blends, or tonal hand dyed yarns will work well.
