Play with Pooling!

These socks are an exercise in controlled pooling, so work them in painted yarn and watch how the colors congregate.

Pooling effects vary with the size of the sock, length of the color changes in the yarn, and your choice of Shuffle Pattern. Your socks will be unique!

This is an 8-page pattern with charts, diagrams, full written instructions in sizes from baby to adult extra large (13 sizes from 4 to 10 inches circumference), many photos of the construction, and links to helpful videos.

Options

• Cuff down or toe up. Instructions are provided for either method. Any size, handpainted yarn.

• Instructions given for sizes from baby to extra large, in a variety of gauges. Best with painted skeins and medium to long color breaks; not suitable for self-striping or kettle-dyed yarns.

• Choose your cuffs and contrasts. Instructions provided for three different cuffs. Option given for working cuffs, toes and short-row heel with contrasting yarn.

Challenges

• Not for beginners; stair-stepping short rows (no wraps) require attention and a good understanding of knitting anatomy. Charts and photos are provided to clarify the pattern. ETA 2019: When this pattern was written, I didn’t know about “shadow wraps,” but that’s what this pattern calls for. If you know shadow-wrap short rows, you’ll find this a breeze but you’ll giggle at my primitive explanation of how to do them. One day I will update the instructions to call them by the correct name, and explain them in more familiar terms.

• Have you ever knit backward? It’s not absolutely essential for these socks, but faster. Instructions are given for backward knitting, as well as some resources for backward knitting tutorials on the web.
