For my last birthday, my mom gave me some yarn including a beautiful single skein of what looks to me like hand-spun silk with beaded thread running along the yarn. I wanted something to make something pretty to show off the yarn, something very open that would let the beads sparkle.

This scarf is designed to show off your prettiest yarn. Since the lace pattern repeat is only 5 stitches wide and it’s the same on every row, this might also be a good first lace project. Since it’s a scarf, gauge is not that important - you will just need to experiment to find a needle size that looks good with your particular yarn. You can always add or subtract a pattern repeat (5 stitches) to make your scarf wider or narrower.

The first and last two rows are garter stitch; every other row has a 2-stitch garter border on each side surrounding three repeats of a very simple lace pattern: k1, yo, k2tog, yo, k2tog.

The PDF file includes these instructions with a little more detail, plus instructions for blocking.

For the etymologically inclined, this lace pattern is called Double Herringbone Faggoting, from the old definition “faggoting: a variation of lace knitting, in which every stitch is a yarn over or a decrease. “
