This striking garter stitch kerchief scarf or shawlette features a textured and raised center panel that resembles the fronds of a fern. The shawl’s name is also a reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail:

“First you must find… another shrubbery! Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here, beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get a two layer effect with a little path running down the middle. (“A path! A path!”) Then, you must cut down the mightiest tree in the forrest… with… a herring!”

It cracks me up every time. :)

You need about 500 yards of Fingering weight yarn such as Brooklyn Tweed’s Loft (2 skeins of it). I used the color Tent to make the olive green scarf shown in the photos. I love this particular wool yarn for the shawl because it has excellent stitch definition and isn’t bulky or heavy like some other woolen yarns.

The teal colored scarf was made using Malabrigo Sock yarn (just 1 skein) in the colorway Solis.

STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES YOU NEED TO KNOW:
You should be able to knit and purl stitches, knit two stitches together (k2tog), do yarn overs (yo) and pass slipped stitches over (psso) in order to complete this shawl or shawlette.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
The shawlette’s finished size measures approximately 33” across the top, 21.5” along the sides and 17” in height from its center point to top edge.
