Sideways Cardigan
Inspired by these beautiful yarns, the pattern of this jacket combines bands of the multitoned Artesano Linen Silk DK, with Fair Isle designs using two solid shades of Alpaca Silk 4ply, worked double to match the weight of the DK. Both yarns, sadly, are now discontinued but if prove to be unavailable, possible alternatives may be suggested through www.yarnsub.com or ask for advice from your yarn shop or www.loveknitting.com. Try to use a multitonal yarn to replace the Linen Silk to get the same effect and the two 4ply solid shades could be substituted with DK weight. Do remember to check your tension of 22sts and 32 rows to 10cm over pattern using 4mm needles, with a swatch.
The jacket is knitted sideways starting with the left front, followed by the back and ending at the right front edge. The sleeves have a slightly raised cap and are set in to the body. A band, or epaulette is added over each shoulder seam and finally the front band, welt and cuffs are added by picking up stitches.
The main sections are worked in stocking stitch with bands of Fair Isle and the edgings are in a simple Garter Slipped Stitch – so no real challenges here but the construction is slightly unusual. Hopefully, you will find this an interesting knit and maybe even set you up for the festival season.
