Sleepy Jean Cardigan
Inspired by my Daydream Believer design, Sleepy Jean is worked from the shoulders-down, with simultaneous set-in sleeves that are worked with the upper bodice in a technique originally described by Barbara Walker (photo tutorial included). The button plackets are worked along with the bodice as well, and allow you to place as many or as few buttons as you like without having to plan ahead.
The peplum is worked separately as a top-down, crescent shawlette that is sewn to the hem after blocking. The shawlette itself is worked from the top-down, and the garter tab cast on is re-engineered to eliminate the “point” that often accompanies this type of shawl construction.
Shaping to the waist and hip is accomplished along princess “seams” to allow for maximum customization. See “Some Thoughts About Fit” in the pattern for advice on how to adapt the shaping to your own fit preferences.
To allow the peplum to drape properly, it’s important to choose a yarn that will have some drape at the stated gauge. A fingeringweight yarn with a bit of silk to it is the preference, although a light-fingeringweight yarn of 100% wool is also an option provided that your gauge doe not tighten on the peplum. A sportweight yarn is not recommended.
