Snow Day Doll
With the cold weather upon us, I was asked to make a kid in a snowsuit. My mind immediately conjured up my childhood and teenage years in Northern Alberta. I remember ice on my eyelashes, and banging the water buckets free on a lone railway tie that stood in the center of our paddock, and chiseling snow stilts off the bottom of horse’s hooves. I remember the paddock door snowed under, and having to dig it free, and the darn Snowy Owl who amused himself at my expense. Grabbing my toque from the top of my head and dropping it in the field, then finding a perch to watch me as I went to retrieve it. I remember cinching my hood of my snowsuit down as far as it would go, and breathing through an icy scarf. Unlike the other kids, I did not find this to be “fun.” I have since escaped the cold and now live of beautiful Vancouver Island, where we are truly spoiled in our gentle climate (well, most the time).
MATERIALS
- Worsted weight yarn (medium 4) - I used 15g (.53 oz) of Loops & Threads, Impeccable in Heather for the skin tone - I used 41g (1.45 oz) of Loops & Threads, Impeccable in Teal as my main color
- For boot and mittens, I used 11g (.39 oz) of Red Heart, Super Saver in Black
- For zipper, pockets, arm bands, and hood tie, I used 4g (.14 oz) of Loops & Threads, Impeccable in Sunny Day
- For scarf, and bottom half of sleeves, I used 9.5g (.34 oz) of Loops & Threads, Impeccable in Aqua
- I used12g (.42 oz) of Lion Brand, Fun Fur Prints in Ginger
- 4mm hook
- Fiberfill
- 10 mm doll safety eyes in black (Not for children under 3. If you are making this for a smaller child please embroider or needle felt the eyes on)
- Doll making needle (or whatever needle you like to hide your ends)
- Optional: a generous pinch of blush for cheeks and nose
GAUGE
Gauge is not important for this pattern. Just make sure its tight so your fiberfill doesn’t show through your stitches. If you are a loose hooker, you might want to go down an additional hook size to compensate for this.
Please make sure that your yarns are a very similar weight. There can be quite a difference within the 4 weight category. This can throw off the fit of the hat.
