Sonobe is an impactful, open-front cardigan whose ingenious construction marries knitting and modular origami. A meandering band of brioche ribbing forms the peplum base of the garment, guiding the eyes along paths both angular and curvilinear. The dramatic A-line flare of the hem is mirrored by jutting brioche lapels, while the rest of the body is left in trim stockinette for a piece that is altogether greater than the sum of its parts.
Construction
Peplum is worked flat in Brioche Stitch in two halves, each beginning at center front and worked sideways to the center back. The two halves are joined using the Modified Exposed Joinery Bind Off. The bodice is picked up directly from the peplum and worked flat to the shoulders in stockinette stitch. Sleeves are worked circularly to the underarm in stockinette with a ribbed cuff, then flat for the cap shaping and sewn into the armholes. Collar is worked in two halves and joined at center back neck using the Modified Exposed Joinery Bind Off, then sewn to the body.
