This design is the eighth of a series—twelve explorations of different stitch patterns throughout 2026—and the second of three projects focused on cables. This month, we are looking at stitch patterns that include cables that twist both to the left and to the right. First, an 8-stitch panel that I know as the OXO cable, but which is sometimes called an XO cable, or “Hugs and Kisses.” Then we’ll look at an allover pattern that’s full of cables, creating a three-dimensional, wavy pattern that you could also use as a wide panel. This month, I’m using abbreviations that focus on the manoeuvres you make to create the cable—C4B and C4F.

The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to finish this project are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit and purl;
  • knitting through the back loop;
  • C4B and C4F;
  • working in the round.
