Stitch Play #6
This design is the sixth of a series—twelve explorations of different knit-purl stitch patterns throughout 2025. Here is a classic “Basketweave” stitch pattern that is a little more complicated than the simple boxes we knit in March, and which looks like it has a proper warp and weft. It isn’t reversible, but it looks quite handsome in a scarf, and the stitch pattern makes a lovely blanket—you could simply add more repeats to the sample square instructions to get the dimensions you require. I’ve designed a little soap sack for this month’s project, and the simple drawstring design could be easily expanded for larger bags. The pattern document includes general instructions for working the Basketweave stitch flat and in the round, as well as specific instructions for a sample square, and a soap sack. It also includes a few designer ideas to help inspire your own designs featuring the Basketweave stitch pattern.
The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:
- cast on and bind-off;
- knit and purl;
- yo increase;
- ssk decrease;
- pk2tog decrease;
- seaming vertical and horizontal edges.
