This design is the seventh of a series—twelve explorations of different knit-purl stitch patterns throughout 2025. This motif of “Divided Boxes” is one of the many variations of the flag stitch pattern that you frequently see in fisherman’s ganseys. While not strictly reversible—the slant dividing the boxes is different on the right and wrong sides—this is still a great stitch pattern for projects like scarves and blankets where both sides are visible. The pattern document includes general instructions for working the “Divided Boxes” stitch flat and in the round, as well as specific instructions for a sample square, and a pair of fingerless mitts. It also includes a few designer ideas to help inspire your own designs featuring the “Divided Boxes” stitch pattern.

The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind-off;
  • knit and purl;
  • seaming cast-on to bound-off edges.
