This pattern is for non-stranded, non-intarsia colour work toe-up socks to make the most of those last few yards of sock yarns that are far too precious to throw out. Make every cross a different colour or every cross the same colour, it is up to you.

The pattern has been written for 52-56-60-64-68-72 stitches at a gauge of 30 stitches and 40 rows per 4 inches. It has also been tested at other gauges with other yarn weights.

A diagram has been provided in the pattern to show how the crosses start/end/overlap as an aid for the written instructions.

There is a small gusset increase as you approach your ankle to give extra ease, and this allows some flexibility to make your heel wider or longer than written if you are knitting to a tighter gauge. These stitches are decreased away after the heel.

In addition to your main colour you will need 60-90 yards in scrap sock yarn for the crosses. To make the most of this pattern choose contrast colour(s) that really stand out against your chosen main colour.

This pattern is not suited to knitting cuff down.
