Sugar Maple is a large, cozy shawl for crisp autumn days and nights. The autumnal colors of CARDO made me think of the colors of sugar maple leaves against a bright blue sky as they fall and drift to the forest floor. Easy to manage Moss and Garter stitches results in a stable, non-curling fabric, just right to wrap around your shoulders for a walk in the woods or at the beach. While CARDO is a heavy worsted yarn, Sugar Maple can be made with any weight of yarn, and any number of colors.

Notes
There are 14 sections (24 rows to a section) to this shawl and the stitch patterns follow a repeating sequence:

Pattern 1
Garter Ridge
Pattern 2
Garter Ridge

The first stitch of every row is slipped to create a smooth, even edge. In general, slip these stitches purlwise. However, there are many different ways to knit. Once this stitch is slipped, look at it and ensure that the knit side faces out and that the stitch is not crossed, that is, the two legs of the knit stitch do not cross at the bottom of the V.

Intarsia designs are worked by having different colors of yarn attached in the same row. The final effect of intarsia knitting should look as though the piece was worked with one strand of yarn. Do not tie knots! When switching from one color to the next, pick up the new color underneath the old color, thus wrapping the two strands together one time.
Sugar Maple uses six colors. Feel free to use more or fewer! If you want to follow the color placements suggested in this pattern using the same or different colors, array them in a manner you find pleasing and then label them colors 1 through 6.
