Summery Ponchette
Welcome to summer! Here’s a sweet, elbow length, poncho, just right for covering your shoulders and arms, IF you ever need to. As I write this pattern, we are in the midst of a record heatwave, with more 90 degree days to come! It’s a good time to head over to your cool LYS to shop for yarn.
This new cotton blend yarn, Summer Sesame, has gorgeous self-striping color ways with a generous sprinkling of fun slubs, adding to the overall texture of the drapey knit. The soft cotton/acrylic/nylon blend is wonderful in your hands, and on your neck and shoulders, and a perfect yarn to knit during warm weather. I hope you enjoy the pattern.
Materials
Three skeins of Berroco, Summer Sesame, 295 yards each. 100 gram skein. (I used 2 ½ skeins)
The sample in the pictures is color #5237.
47% Cotton/44% Acrylic/9% Nylon.
Or same yardage of any light dk weight yarn.
Size 4 knitting needles, circular 32” length or straight.
Yarn needle.
Optional: 7-10, ½” buttons, sewing thread and needle.
It is approximately 48 wide x 21” deep. Gauge: 5 sts./in.
Seamed 12-15” from edge to neck.
The ponchette is knit flat on a diagonal to the center, then reverses directions, resulting in a V shape.
As much as I love this yarn, another light dk, sport or fingering may be used with this pattern.
Thank you to Carrie for the genius construction idea!
Yes, it IS like the Springtime Ponchette - only different. Different yarn weight, different stitch and row counts, different needle size - so different, it needs its own pattern. This will work with many yarn options.
Thank you! Enjoy!
Note: I am a loose knitter. I had to go to size 4 needles to get the stitches to behave. The fabric does grow a bit. If you are a tight or normal knitter, you may want to go up to size 5. Gauge is not ultra critical, and you may adjust how much to seam the work when finishing. Thanks so much!
