Surpass Sweater
A classic sweater, in classic yarn, with a classic Lily-style shoulder detail inspired by stitching found on leather biker jackets. Ample opportunity to play with colour & yarn combinations with this one! The pattern includes instructions for a separate shoulder swatch so you can try the technique before beginning the whole sweater.
___________
YARN: Sport / light DK weight yarn.
Approx 1003 (1120; 1206; 1282; 1361) (1370; 1479; 1547; 1664) metres / 1097 (1224; 1319; 1401; 1489) (1498; 1617; 1692; 1820) yards for waist length version.
Approx 1148 (1282; 1382; 1474; 1568) (1585; 1711; 1793; 1926) metres / 1256 (1402; 1512; 1612; 1715) (1733; 1871; 1960; 2107) yards for full length version.
Sample shown in Cardiff Cashmere Classic (100% Cashmere, 112m / 122 yards per 25g ball) in shade Zoe.
If using this yarn, you will need 9 (10; 11; 12; 13) (13; 14; 14; 15) balls for the waist length version and 11 (12; 13; 14; 14) (15; 16; 17; 18) balls for the full length version.
Options B, C & D will also need scraps for contrast yarns / colours (CC).
GAUGE: 22 sts and 30 rows to 4 inches / 10 cm in stocking stitch blocked. Suggested size 3.75 mm.
NEEDLES & NOTIONS:
3.75mm & 3.5mm circular needles of length 24” / 60cm or 30” / 80cm, depending on size
3.75mm & 3.5mm needle(s) of your preferred length for working small circumferences in the round (ie. DPNs, short circulars, magic loop) for sleeves.
You will also need a tapestry needle, stitch markers, stitch holders, and scrap yarn.
SIZING: 1 (2; 3; 4; 5) 6; 7; 8; 9 detailed below, designed to be worn with 5-7” / 13-18 cm positive ease for sizes 1-5 and 3-5” / 8-13cm positive ease for sizes 6-9. Sample shown is a size 2 worn on a 34” bust with approx 5” positive ease.
If you are between sizes, size down. If you are on the petite side or have a small frame (ie. narrow shoulders, even if you have a large chest) I’d also recommend sizing down, as the fit around the shoulders is crucial. If the shoulders are too big, the whole item will look sloppy and ill-fitting.
To fit bust: 28-30 (32-34; 36-38; 40-42; 44-46) (48-50; 52-54; 56-58; 60-62) inches / 71-76 (81-86; 91-97; 102-107; 112-117) (122-127; 132-137; 142-147; 152-157) cm.
Finished bust: 34.5 (39; 42.5; 47; 50.5) (52.5; 57; 60.5; 65) inches / 88 (99; 108; 119; 128) 134; 145; 154; 165 cm.
Choosing yarn: I would recommend choosing a lightweight yarn with a high meterage per 50g (cashmere is of course great for this, but so are acrylic ‘baby yarns’).
The Surpass Sweater is #SizeInclusive to a bust of 62”.
