Tanera
The hat is named after a dear friend who is named after Tanera Mòr one of the Summer Isles on West Coast of Scotland.
Pattern Notes
This is a hat knitted from the bottom-up beginning with rounds of corrugated rib. The body and crown of the hat are knitted following colourwork charts. Charts are read from right to left.
There are instructions for two versions - a three or five colour hat.
The graphs are coloured indicating the colours for both versions of hat. Or knit the hat with your own colour scheme.
The three colour version is shown knitted in naturally dyed wool from Shilasdair which is called Coara fingering weight.
The five colour version is knit in Spindrift Shetland wool from Jamieson’s of Shetland 4ply / fingering - this version has an extra peerie (small) pattern before knitting the crown section to ensure the hat has enough depth in the hat. Though you could leave this out if you prefer a hat that is shallower and does not come down over ears.
It could also be knit using jumper weight / 4ply Shetland wool from Jamieson and Smith.
The hat is knit using a circular 16 inch / 40 cm long needle. Though you require three 8 inch / 20 cm needles of same size needle used when you are near end of knitting the hat due to the reduction of stitches at top of the crown. Suggested needle size US 4 / 3.25 mm. Though do knit for required gauge.
