IMPORTANT: the yarn weight and needle sizes depend on the hat size you choose. Read below carefully.

Tayuela is a cabled hat with a folded brim and a tubular cast on. In the area of Spain where I’m from a “tayuela” is a 3-legged stool traditionally used to milk cows. I have one in my house and I spent several lovely hours sitting on it in front of the wood-burning stove knitting this hat last Christmas. The hat is available in several sizes, from newborn to adult.

SIZES
0-3 months (3-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-3 years, 3-10 years, adult). The cables in this hat make it very stretchy. The adult size would fit from 11 years old and up.

MATERIALS
• 40 cm / 16” long circular needles in the following sizes depending on the hat size. On the last couple of rounds you may need to change to DPNs (double-pointed needles) or pull out the ends of the needles (where they join the cable) between two stitches so you are more confortable knitting fewer stitches.

• 0-3 months: 3.5 mm (US4) for the ribbing and 4 mm (US6) for the body.
• 3-6 months: 3.5 mm (US4) for the ribbing and 4.5 mm (US7) for the body.
• 6-12 months: 4 mm (US6) for the ribbing and 5 mm (US8) for the body.
• 1-3 years: 4.5 mm (US7) for the ribbing and 5 mm (US8) for the body.
• 3-10 years: 3.5 mm (US4) for the ribbing and 4.5 mm (US7) for the body.
• adult: 4 mm (US6) for the ribbing and 5 mm (US8) for the body.

• other: markers, cable needle, tapestry needle

YARN
The weight and amount of yarn will depend on the size:
• 0-3 m, 3-6 m, 3-10 y: approximately 75 (100, -, -, 125, -) m / 82 (110, -, -, 137, -) yards of DK weight yarn. I used Knit by Numbers by John Arbon in colours 96 (blue) for the baby size and 91 (mauve) the child size.
• 6-12 m, 1-3 y, adult: approximately - (-, 90, 120, - 140) m / - (-, 98, 131, -, 153) yards of Aran weight yarn. I used Triskelion Scylfing Aran in the Embers End (grey) colourway.

GAUGE
DK (0-3 m, 3-6 m, 3-10 y):
• Ribbing (unstretched): 27 st x 36 rounds in 10 cm / 4” with the smaller needles
• Body (unstretched): 28 st x 32 rounds in 10 cm / 4” with the bigger needles
Aran (6-12 m, 1-3 y, adult):
• Ribbing (unstretched): 26 st x 30 rounds in 10 cm / 4” with the smaller needles
• Body (unstretched): 31 st x 27 rounds in 10 cm / 4” with the bigger needles

DIMENSIONS
With the brim folded, 11 (12, 14, 17, 18, 20) cm / 4.5 (4.75, 5.5, 6.75, 7, 8) “ wide (at the brim) and 14 (17, 18, 19, 20, 21) cm / 5.5 (6.75, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.25) “ long (from folded brim to crown).

Tayuela es un gorro de ochos y trenzas con un elástico doblado y montaje tubular. En Asturias una “tayuela” es la banqueta tradicional de tres patas que se usa para ordeñar las vacas. Tengo una en mi casa de Asturias y me pasé unas cuantas horas muy agradables sentada en ella en frente de la estufa tejiendo este gorro. El gorro tiene varias tallas, de recién nacido a adulto.

TALLAS
0-3 meses (3-6 meses, 6-12 meses, 1-3 años, 3-10 años, adulto). El uso de trenzas hace que este sea un gorro muy elástico. La talla de adulto sirve a partir de los 11 años.

MATERIALES
• agujas circulares de los siguientes números según talla, de una longitud de 40 cm. En el último par de vueltas de disminuciones puedes sacar los extremos de las agujas por donde se unen a los cables entre dos puntos para tejer más cómodamente o cambiar a agujas de doble punta.

• 0-3 meses: agujas de 3,5 mm (para el elástico) y 4 mm (parte principal)
• 3-6 meses: agujas de 3,5 mm (para el elástico) y 4,5 mm (parte principal)
• 6-12 meses: agujas de 4 mm (para el elástico) y 5 mm (parte principal)
• 1-3 años: agujas de 4,5 mm (para el elástico) y 5 mm (parte principal)
• 3-10 años: agujas de 3,5 mm (para el elástico) y 4,5 mm (parte principal)
• Adulto: agujas de 4 mm (para el elástico) y 5 mm (parte principal)

LANA
El grosor y cantidad de lana depende de la talla:
• 0-3 m, 3-6 m, 3-10 años: aproximadamente 75 (100, -, -, 125, -) m de lana de grosor DK (aproximadamente 250 m en 100 g). Yo usé Knit by Numbers de John Arbon en los colores 96 (azul) para bebé y 91 (malva) para niño.
• 6-12 m, 1-3 años, adulto: aproximadamente - (-, 90, 120, -, 140) m de lana de grosor Aran (aproximadamente 170 m en 100 g). Yo usé Triskelion Scylfing Aran en color Embers End (gris).

TENSIÓN
DK (0-3 m, 3-6 m, 3-10 años)
• Elástico (sin estirar): 27 pt x 36 vueltas en 10 cm con las agujas más pequeñas
• Sección de trenzas (sin estirar): 28 pt x 32 vueltas en 10 cm con las agujas más grandes
Aran (6-12 m, 1-3 años, adulto):
• Elástico (sin estirar): 26 pt x 30 vueltas en 10 cm con las agujas más pequeñas
• Sección de trenzas (sin estirar): 31 pt x 27 vueltas en 10 cm con las agujas más grandes

DIMENSIONES
Con el borde del elástico doblado, 11 (12, 14, 17, 18, 20) cm de ancho por 14 (17, 18, 19, 20, 21) cm de alto.
