Terrie mittens

Terrie mittens are one size; to fit on average age 18m to 3yrs toddler. They measure 12cm circumference at narrowest part of cuff and 14cm long.

Although the pattern is one size, the actual size can be changed by using larger or smaller needle sizes. Please pay particular attention to the required tension as my knitting tends to be close.

I would recommend using 100% Shetland wool for best results, the ultimate in warmth. You will require two colours only.

For this design I have chosen an old, traditional motif for the back of the hand. In Shetland folklore, trows are mischievous beings somewhere in between fairies and Scandanivian trolls. They are small, unsightly, shy creatures who love music. I remember being attentive at school when we were taught Shetland poetry written by Vagaland in Shetland dialect. I was particularly captivated by the poem “Eence apon a time” and loved the tale of Peesterleetie, Terrie mittens and Trunsher Face. When I designed these bairns mittens there was no other name for them but “Terrie mittens”
