The Crayon Box 18-01
The soft yarn and supple rib pattern ensure that this scarf will be comfortable snuggled tightly around your neck.
This is a simple project, and a good scarf pattern for beginning knitters who want to move beyond garter stitch.
Mistake rib is a common stitch pattern for scarves. I knit the last, “extra” stitch of each row, creating a tidy garter stitch selvedge. If you prefer, purl that last stitch instead. Create a chain edging by slipping the first stitch and purling the last stitch of each row. You can experiment with selvedge stitches when you swatch for this project, and pick what works best for you.
This design is easily altered. Change the width by casting on more--or fewer--stitches in groups of four. Change the length by knitting however long you like. The simple stitch pattern can be knit with yarns of different weights. Use a bulky yarn for a quick knit, or a fingering-weight yarn for a thinner, lighter scarf that will easily tuck inside your coat. Just be aware that any such changes will affect the amount of yarn needed and the size of needle you should use.
These suggestions for changing yarns and selvedge stitches are included in the pattern.
