Elizabeth Zimmerman is one of my favorite designers. This shawl was created based on her PI shawl, which is based on the mathematical principle of Pi.
This project is for all knitters who know how to knit, purl and create a yarnover. You start with 9 sts and end with 576 stitches! The cast off method resembles a picot crochet but it is done with your knitting needles.
I recently taught a “Knit to Change” class at Fresh Purls in Providence, RI. This class was designed for students to quit a bad habit while they learned a new but easy knitting skill. Hence, the Traveling Rib Shawl, which teaches how to do increases between knit and purl stitches, track row counts between increase rows and an easy but interesting cast off method. The students had 4 weeks to quit a bad habit and create a beautiful shawl! Some of the different yarns used were: Rittenhouse by Manos, Opus by Skacel and Twizzle by Mountain Colors.
