A striped hat using brioche and double brioche stitch techniques, incorporating decreases and panels of garter stitch. The Trireme was a form of wooden warship used by ancient Mediterranean civilisations and the shapes and patterns in the hat are inspired by the lines and curves of historical wooden ships.

The pattern includes a full photo tutorial on the specific decreases used in the double-brioche section of the hat and is supplemented by additional free brioche tutorials on my website.

Allow the following approximate quantities of a fingering weight yarn:
A – 71m/78yd

Needles and Notions
Preferred needles, in size required to obtain gauge over brioche colourwork, for medium circumference knitting (eg a circular needle, 40cm/16in length). Gauge was achieved using 3.75mm (US 5).
Similar needle(s) two sizes smaller for working hat brim.
Set of gauge-size DPNs for hat crown.
8 stitch markers.
Tapestry needle for finishing.
Large pom-pom (optional).

Gauge
22 sts and 22 rnds to 10cm/4in, after wetblocking, over double brioche pattern worked in the round (note - 1 rnd comprises 1 MC and 1 CC rnd). Equivalent gauge 17 sts and 22 rnds over single brioche. Gauge achieved using 3.75mm (US 5) needles. Adjust needle size(s) if necessary to obtain gauge.

One size: circumference 56cm/22.5in, length 29cm/11.5in with brim turned down.
