This textured, reversible, unisex scarf works up fast in Tunisian crochet - perfect for both advanced beginners and experienced TC-ers! There’s a companion hat too, available here
The body pattern has both texture and drape and the neck ribbing anchors the scarf around your neck and provides warmth. The body pattern is an easily remembered repeat. You can see the texture in this video
My inspiration for this design comes from knitted Seamen’s scarves of the late 19th century - they have center neck ribbing and a garter or different stitch pattern for the scarf body.
The mustard scarf is worked in 100 grams of DK weight yarn, and the gray scarf in 200 grams of aran weight yarn.
The pattern has been tested. Pattern PDF includes a 6-page photo tutorial for special stitches and techniques. Instructions are given for 2 versions (DK and Aran) with tips for adjusting size, if desired.
The Tunisian Etude Scarf was initially published in the January 2018 Issue of Happily Hooked Magazine, “Winter Wear”.
Materials: 7 mm Tunisian hook, US Size J/10 (6mm) crochet hook (aran version).
6mm Tunisian hook, US Size H/8 (5mm) crochet hook (DK version)
Size: 62” long x 7” wide (aran version). 61” long x 6” wide (DK version).
Yarn (aran version): Knit Picks City Tweed Aran/HW yarn (164 yds/100 grams), 55% Merino wool, 25% superfine alpaca, 20% Donegal tweed, colour Tahitian Pearl: 2 skeins.
Yarn (DK version): Vardhman Millenium, DK weight yarn, acrylic-nylon, (275 meters/300 yds/100 grams), colour 113: 1 skein.
Yarn of similar weight may be substituted (see list above for testers’ yarns).
Note: the Aran & DK versions had 5 grams and 4 grams respectively of remaining yarn at end of work. You may wish to have more yarn at hand if using a different brand.
Many thanks to my wonderful testers - CrankyOldBroad, marywestland, Mamaloftinand Goldberryknits!
