Cozy and quick winter hat with a sparkling diamond fair isle pattern. The super bulky yarn creates a bold and modern graphic look. Knit circularly from brim to crown and topped with a pompom. Different gauges determine the size. Start knitting on the Solstice and finish by Christmas!

I was able to get a size small hat and a size large hat out of 2 skeins of Puffin with not much left over. NOT including the pompom!

Note on Yarn: Although Puffin is classed as “super bulky” I think regular bulky would work too, it just won’t be as dense.

Gauge
in stranded colorwork pattern on needles to give correct gauge.
Size S; 7.5 sts x 9 rnds = 2x2in 5x5cm
Size M; 7 sts x 8.5 rnds = 2x2in 5x5cm
Size L; 6.5 sts x 8 rnds = 2x2in 5x5cm

Different sized needles will yield different gauges.
I suggest needle sizes, but ultimately gauge will depend upon your own personal knitting style and your choice of yarn.

Some people may be able to get all three sizes using the same set of needles by adjusting their tension.

All sizes use a smaller needle for the ribbing and a larger-sized needle for the hat’s body. The larger-sized needle is also used to close up the crown, with either Double Pointed Needles or your preferred circular needles for working narrow circumferences.

Suggested Needles
Size Small
Ribbing 16in 40cm circular needle in size US 9 (5.5mm)
Body 16in 40cm circular needle in size US 10 (6mm) and DPNs or your preferred circular needles for working narrow circumferences

Size Medium
Ribbing 16in 40cm circular needle in size US 9 (5.5mm)
Body 16in 40cm circular needle in size US 10½ (6.5mm) and DPNs or your preferred circular needles for working narrow circumferences

Size Large
Ribbing 16in 40cm circular needle in size US 10 (6mm)
Body 16in 40cm circular needle in size US 11 (8mm) and DPNs or your preferred circular needles for working narrow circumferences
