Two Way Titfer Tat 18" dolls
“Titfer Tat” is Cockney Rhyming Slang for a hat, so in London a hat is often referred to as a “titfer”.
The main part of the hat is knitted in one piece with the shaping provided by using the short row technique. The stockinette stitch bands are separated by reverse stockinette stitch ridges, which ridges are gathered into a fan shape to create the hat.
This fun hat can be worn two ways: with the fan shape at the side for a modern look, or with the fan shape at the front for a more Art Deco look.
Worked in fingering or sock yarn using US Size 2 (2.75mm) needles, the hat is a great way to use up leftover scraps as each of the “stripes” takes up very little yarn.
The hat can be made with many colors (7 colors were used in the rainbow version), or just one or two. A two color hat with just the ridges knitted in a contrasting color is particularly striking.
If desired, the hat can be finished with a pompom, a big button or a knitted flower placed at the point where the row ends are gathered into a fan.
Your doll is bound to pester you to make her more than one of these hats and you will love to oblige her whims! Why? It’s quick to knit, it’s stylish, it helps you to use up all those scraps of yarn left over from other projects and it is a great way to practice a new technique if you haven’t knitted short rows before.
