Underbrush
Underbrush is a simple rectangular lace wrap whose loose gauge will work with anything from laceweight to sport weight yarn. The undulating, organic lace chart is easy to memorize and a comfort to knit. While instructions are given for a single size, it would be easy to modify the cast on amount and length to achieve a wide range of sizes.
This pattern is dedicated to my cat Whispy, who passed too soon in March 2020 and loved life more than anyone I know. He loved to wear a harness and go outside to root around in the underbrush. Click here to read my blog post about how Whispy inspired this wrap. CW: pet death.
Both charted and written instructions are included.
Construction
This wrap is knit flat from end to end. You will cast on at the first short edge, repeat the lace pattern until your desired length, and then bind off at the second short edge. All WS rows are ‘rest rows’ with only purls and no lace.
Yarn
660 yd / 603 m of fingering weight yarn. Laceweight and sport weight yarns will also work.
I knit my sample using a handspun, 3-ply fingering weight yarn. I used the entirety of my 146 g, 608 yd / 556 m handspun skein.
Gauge
One full 12-row repeat of the lace pattern should be about 2.5 in / 6.4 cm wide (stitch-wise) by about 2.25 in / 5.7 cm long (row-wise), after blocking aggressively.
Your blocked gauge will vary based on how aggressively you block your wrap.
Finished Measurements
17.5 in / 44.5 cm wide by 70 in / 177.8 cm long.
Needles
US 6 / 4.0 mm needle in your preferred length and type for flat knitting, or a needle that gives you a gauge and fabric you like for lace knitting.
Notions
Stitch markers for marking repeats (optional), tape measure, tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
