Weavers Square
These two scarves, inspired by the traditional craft of handweaving, combine stranding and simple lace knitting. Both samples were knit on 3.25mm/US3 needles with Brooklyn Tweed Loft, 100% wool, with various amounts of the following 12 colors: cast iron, meteorite, old world, button jar, bale, faded quilt, barn owl, snowbound, cinnabar, long johns, almanac, & tartan. Each full skein contains 275yds/251m.
Weavers Square is close to where I live in Dublin. The nearby areas of Tenters and Blackpitts were historical centers of weaving and tanning - Tenters was named after the practice of stretching woven silk to dry in the fresh air.
The stripe pattern requires approximately 110g/600yds/550m
Dimensions: 44ins/112cm by 12.5in/32cm
The check pattern requires approximately 90g/500yds/450m
Dimensions: 48in/122cm by 7.5in/20cm
Gauge of both approximately 24 sts and 24 rows = 4ins/10cm in stranded knitting.
The patterns are suitable for using up different quantities of various leftover yarns - you can play around with the color changes, experiment with color and tonal combinations and introduce little mistakes in the stranded knitting to create your own woven effects.
Skills required: back and forth stranding, trapping simple lace work. I spliced all yarn ends, however you can weave in ends if you want.
Charted patterns with short written notes and a splicing phototutorial. As the patterns are designed to use up various amounts of leftover yarn, the color distribution is not detailed in the pattern.
