Woolen Socks
Margaret Boyd’s woolen socks are
wonderful and warm—a good weight
for underboots or wearing around
the house in the winter. You might
want to affix soft leather soles for
houseboots as a variation.
Margaret used her Ashford wheel
to spin 3”-3 Vi“ staple Corriedale
fleece with “plenty of crimp” into
singles woolen sport yarn (about 880
yards per pound). Approximately
250-300 yards are needed per pair
of socks.
The wool was soaked in warm
sudsy water, dyed with natural dyes
and dried. Then it was hand carded
before spinning with colors blended
for a tweedy effect on the unstriped
socks. The spun yarn was washed,
rinsed and hung weighted to dry.
Margaret’s socks are an easy way to
use up odd lots of dyed yarn, colored
fleece, or bits of yarn spun from
“exotic” fibers.
