Woolly Kogin is a sock knitting pattern featuring Kogin-Sashi and Sashiko needlework. Socks are worked toe-up with a decorative heel flap. Directions are written for the magic loop method with circular needles. Additional Modoko (Kogin-Sashi) Patterns, Cat Patterns (Eastern Cat / Western Cat), and video tutorials are included.

Tsugaru Kogin-Sashi is traditional Japanese embroidery originated in Tsugaru region (Northeast Japan). In the original Kogin, cotton or linen fabric is embroidered with cotton thread. The technique was developed by farmers in the Edo period, to make their clothes warmer and more durable to help them survive the harsh winters in a heavy snowfall region.

津軽こぎん：青森県・津軽地方で生まれた刺し子「津軽こぎん」。本来のこぎん刺しでは綿や麻の生地に綿糸で模様を刺します。江戸時代、藩令により庶民は木綿の着用を禁止され、自家製の麻布を着用しました。目の粗い麻布を補強し、厳しい冬の寒さから身を守るために生まれた技術は、幾何学模様が特徴のこぎん刺しへと発展しました。
